![]() Save for maybe Russia, no other European country makes movies and media about its distant past on a regular basis. Even Mongolia, with its smaller population and GDP, seems to make a biopic about Genghis Khan once every couple of years. ![]() All it takes is a quick search on YouTube and you’ll quickly find some Chinese soap opera set during ancient times (same goes for India too). Strangely compared to Europe, Asian countries (not counting the “Middle East”or West Asia, technically speaking) seem to make movies and TV shows with ancient/medieval historical settings all the time. Or like a Hungarian movie about Attila the Hun or Countess Bathory? Or a French movie about Joan of Arc? Or a Swedish movie about Vikings (I think Leif Eriksson would make for a fascinating biopic)?…etc. ![]() For example why hasn’t Italy made its own more historically accurate version of the Ridley Scott Gladiator movie? “Italian horror” and “Spaghetti westerns” are internationally beloved brands, but why haven’t the Italians made a big budget movie series set during Ancient Rome? Or a biopic on Caligula, Da Vinci or Galileo Galilei? ![]()
